'Joshua 1:1-9'

Joshua 1:9 NAS
Have I not commanded you? Be STRONG and COURAGEOUS! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

I love this verse. I found myself longing for these words this morning, since I woke up feeling NOT strong, NOT courageous, kind of scared, and a LOT dismayed. But the truth is, it's not this verse that brings me comfort; rather, it's the truths found in the verses prior to this verse, working hand in hand with this verse—that helps me. Specifically, it's the big picture reminders in Joshua 1:1-9 that help me to be “strong and courageous,” and to “not tremble or be dismayed.” Verse by verse, I will explain...

Joshua 1:1: “Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, that the Lord spoke to Joshua:” I am encouraged when I remember my God is NOT a silent God—He speaks, and He speaks to us through His Son and the Word (Hebrews 1:1-2, 4:12).

Joshua 1:2: “...arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people:” I feel less dismayed when I remember God is the one who assigns His people to certain tasks.

Joshua 1:3: “Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses:” I feel courageous when I remember God ALWAYS keeps His promises—what He has spoken is TRUE and WILL HAPPEN!

Joshua 1:4: “From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory:” How blessed I am when I remember my God generously bestows and GIVES—the ultimate gift being His SON!

Joshua 1:6a: “No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life:” How brave and courageous I feel when I remember NOTHING can “stand before,” hinder, or stop God's perfect plans and purposes for me, NOTHING can stop His Word, and NOTHING can stop His advancing “Kingdom!”

Joshua 1:6b: “Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you:” How can I tremble if Almighty God is “WITH” me? How can I feel dismayed if He never “fails” or “forsakes” me?

Joshua 1:7-8: “Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success:” I can be strong and courageous when I am being “CAREFUL” to obey my Lord, “CAREFUL to do” and live as He has instructed in His Word. He will give me “success” in living for Him (as I do what He has called me to do) when I keep His Son, His Word, and His ways at the forefront of my mind, letting His Spirit lead me...

Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be STRONG and COURAGEOUS! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go!”
