'Growing Up'

Ephesians 4:15 NAS
...we are to grow up in all aspects into Him...

Reading through Ephesians this morning, I started thinking about all the ways, ALL the “aspects” we Believers “are to grow up” into “Him,” our Savior. Here's what I found...

We are to grow up—in Him—in understanding who we are in Christ...
“He chose us in Him..in love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ (1:4-5)...having been predestined according to His purpose...” (Ephesians 1:11). “For we are His workmanship” (2:10). “You were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord” (5:8).

We are to grow up—in Him—in understanding what Christ has done...
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace” (1:7) “God...made us alive together with Christ (by grace we have been saved!), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus” (2:4-6). “In Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (2:13).

We are to grow up—in Him—in understanding what we have in Christ...
“you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance” (1:13-14). We “are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel” (3:6). “God...has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (1:3), ”the hope of His calling...the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints...and the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe” (1:18,19). “He...is able to do exceedingly abundantly BEYOND all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us” (3:20)

We are to grow up—in Him—in godly wisdom and knowledge of Him...
“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ...may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him” (1:16-17).

We are to grow up—in Him—in understanding what God is doing with us...
“You are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household...fitted together...growing into a holy temple in the Lord...being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit” (2:19-22). Together, we share the Gospel, “speaking the Truth in love” (4:15) so “that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church...in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord” (3:8-11).

We are to grow up—in Him—in understanding what God wants us to do...
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (2:10). “With good will render service as to the lord, and not to men” (6:7) “Walk as children of light...trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord” (5:7, 10), “not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil” (5:15-16).

We are to grow up—in Him—in His strength...
“..that He would grant you...to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man” (3:16). “Be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil” (6:10-11).

We are to grow up—in Him—in abiding in Christ's love...
“...that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend...what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to KNOW the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God” (3:17-19)...being filled “with the Holy Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (5:18-20).

We are to grow up—in Him—in spiritual maturity...
We need to learn Christ—we“have heard Him and have been taught in Him...Truth is in Jesus” (4:20-21). We are to“be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth” (4:23-24). We are called to “be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us...” (5:1-2)

We are to grow up—in Him—in our big picture understanding...
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (6:12).

We are to grow up—in Him—in prayer...
“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit...with all perseverance and petition for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18).

We are to grow up—in Him—in our love for the Lord...
“Grace be with those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with a love incorruptible” (6:24).

Hmm...folks, that's a LOT of “aspects” for us Believers to be growing up! I'm sure this list is not exhausted, and I am also sure that I'm nowhere NEAR as grown up as I should be...

Lord, we brothers and sisters in Christ surrender our hearts to you today. We all know we have SO MUCH growing up to do! Draw us to Yourself, Lord, fill us with Your Spirit, and create in us a hunger for Your life-changing Word—increasingly grow us UP “in all aspects into” You!

AMEN!
