Nehemiah 12:46 NAS
For in the days of David and Asaph, in ancient times, there were leaders of the singers, songs of praise and hymns of thanksgiving to God.
and Mattaniah the son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who was the leader in beginning the thanksgiving at prayer...
The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah who was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving, he and his brothers.
As I was looking up “thanksgiving” verses this morning, I came across a Levite named “Mattaniah.” He was a descendant of Asaph (Asaph wrote many of the Psalms). I found it interesting that “Mattaniah” was “the leader in beginning the thanksgiving at prayer,” the one “who was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving.” Giving thanks to God was his job. Giving thanks to God was what He led others to do...
Folks, if I had that job, boy would I take that job seriously! I'd be constantly disciplining myself to think of things to thank my Lord for! On account of keeping my Lord's goodness and character and lovingkindness at the forefront of my mind, I'd be constantly filled with praise for Him—because I'd always be thinking about 1) ALL my Savior has done for me, 2) ALL He does for me, 3) ALL His forgiveness, 4) ALL He has promised, 5) ALL His love and life and help and presence...oh, how easy the “thanksgiving” job would be, with my wonderful Savior and Lord at the forefront of my mind!
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Thanksgiving may be just around the corner, but let's not make it a once a year thing: let's be inspired by Mattaniah's job and make “thanksgiving” our mind's daily occupation, our daily job, and what we daily lead others to do...
Heavenly Father, help us Believers daily “devote” ourselves to You and “to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of THANKSGIVING” (Colossians 4:2)! With Your Son at the forefront of our minds, we will (each day) do our “thanksgiving” jobs and say “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and THANKSGIVING and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever! AMEN” (Revelation 7:12)! We “enter” Your “gates with thanksgiving and (Your) courts with praise! (We) give thanks to (You), bless (Your) name! For (You are) good; (Your) lovingkindness is everlasting and (Your) faithfulness to all generations” (Psalm 100:4-5)! “Let us come before (Your) presence with thanksgiving, let us shout joyfully to (You) with psalms” (Psalm 95:2)!
Holy Spirit, help us to daily “praise the name of God with song and magnify Him with thanksgiving” (Psalm 69:30)! We desire to have thankful hearts, and we desire to lead others to magnify Him!
