'The Mug Reminder'
Micah 6:6-8 NAS
With what shall I come to the Lord and bow myself before the God on high?
Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings, with yearling calves?
Does the Lord take delight in thousands of rams, in ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you
But to DO JUSTICE, to LOVE KINDNESS,
And to WALK HUMBLY humbly with your God?
I recently purchased a coffee mug for one of my sons. On one side, it says “DO JUSTICE, LOVE KINDNESS, and WALK HUMBLY with your God.” On the other side, it says “It's a guy thing”...and I like that. It's a good reminder for my son, but it's also a good one for me and for all of us who believe—because our Lord has clearly told us little people (“O man!”) “what is good” and what He requires “of” us:
When I looked up the word “justice” in the Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, it said “the maintenance or administration of what is just—the quality of being just, impartial, or fair.” But it also said “conformity to truth,” which caught me off guard. That “conformity to truth” definition caused me to wonder: “Am I being conformed to God's truth? Is God's Word working in me, changing me, so I am living and acting correctly—according to His Truth, His instructions?” Hmm...
When I think of “kindness,” I can't help but think of the Savior's unmerited favor He showed in sacrificially coming, living, and dying for us—for sin-filled me. The way He lived and the way He died truly SHOWED His loving kindness! I should also desire to “love kindness” like Him—what I say/think/do should demonstrate His love and kindness toward others 1) on account of my being “predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son” (Romans 8:29), and 2) on account of my gratitude and love for my Savior...
“WALK HUMBLY with your God”
Whenever I think of walking “humbly” with God, I remind myself 1) I am totally dependent upon my loving, heavenly Father for everything, 2) He knows the way I am to go (the right way, the best way, the perfect way for my best good!), 3) He's given me His Son and His Word and His Spirit so I can know Him and follow His good, right ways, 4) I am to obey my Savior, King and Master...
Heavenly Father: help us Believers remember, every day...
“He has told you...what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you?
WALK HUMBLY with your God!
