'Effective Prayer'

Matthew 7:7-8 NLT

Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

Jesus gives some interesting instructions on prayer in these two verses. As He teaches His followers, He speaks of prayer as “the appointed means of obtaining what we need, especially the grace to obey the precepts He had given” (Matthew Henry). Moreover, the manner in which we followers are to pray is quite clear: “Jesus tells us to persist in pursuing God” (Life Application Study Bible)...

I. So we who follow Jesus are to “Pray; pray often; pray with sincerity and seriousness; pray, and pray again; make conscience of prayer, and be constant in it; make a business of prayer, and be earnest in it” (Matthew Henry).

II. Moreover, we are to “keep on asking” as a beggar asks alms. We “keep on asking” because we know God is our support and supply. We “Ask as a traveler asks the way, praying to inquire of God as to His will, His Way, and His wisdom” (Matthew Henry).

III. Furthermore, we “keep on seeking” as “for a thing of value that we have lost” (Henry). This means we we must diligently “keep on seeking” our God, and we must “keep on seeking” for that which we ask for.

IV. Finally, we followers of Christ must not only ask and seek, but we are to “keep on knocking;” we “must come to God’s door, must ask importunately; not only pray, but plead and wrestle with God; we must seek diligently; we must continue knocking; we must persevere in prayer” (Henry). We are to do this 1) as we pray with God's interests in mind, 2) as we pray according to His promises in the Word, 3) as we pray according to God's character and will, AND 4) as we sincerely seek to follow Him and do His will. When we do this, our prayers will not be in vain, “For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Heavenly Father, help us followers become effective prayer warriors! Specifically, we ask that we increasingly “keep on asking,” “keep on seeking,” and “keep on knocking” according to Your Son's instructions and according to Your will. We ask because we desire to confidently and constantly ask, seek, and knock...and have “the door” opened! With our “conscience” clear, “we can come to (You) with bold confidence. And we will receive whatever we request because we obey (You) and do the things that please” You (1 John 3:21-22). As we obey and do Your will, “we can be confident that (You) will listen to us whenever we ask (You) for anything in line with (Your) will. And if we know (You are) listening when we make our requests, we can be sure that (You) will give us what we ask for” (1 John 5:14-15). We ask this in Your Son's “name,” knowing He “will do it, because the work of the Son brings glory to the Father” (John 14:13-14)!

AMEN!!!
