'Praying For Harmony!'
Psalm 133 NLT
How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!
For harmony is as precious as the anointing oil that was poured over Aaron’s head,
that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe.
Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion.
And there the Lord has pronounced His blessing, even life everlasting.
When I came across Psalm 133 this morning, I couldn't help but pause and ask God for increased harmony in our home—because the truth is this: my family consists of seven sin-filled “works-in-progress,” and life at our house is sometimes far from harmonious (we sometimes behave more like screeching monkeys in the wild!)...
Why is harmony so hard, folks? It's hard because each member of my family (me included) has a secret, built in desire to live for “self.” We each desire to be “king of the hill.” That is, each of us likes to do things “our own way,” we each tend to think our way is the only correct way, we disagree over stupid nonessential issues (all the time!), we insist others listen while failing to reciprocate, we subtly put others down so we look more “right,” we focus on failures, we assume the worst, we judge, we look out for our own interests, and we do as we want with no thought as to how our choices effect others...
The problem with living for “self,” folks, is that life without harmony is really miserable...
So today I'm praying that we (my family, myself, you, your family, our church family), I'm praying that we CHOOSE “harmony:”
1) That we choose to remember our King values harmony (it is “wonderful” and “precious!”),
2) That we choose to delight in each other, to promote each other's welfare, to serve each other in love,
3) That we choose to “live together in harmony,” having one heart, one soul, and one interest—living for our King,
4) That we choose to be united under one common head—Jesus Christ,
5) That we choose to live in Christ's love...
Brother's and sisters in Christ, let us strive for unity each day because there are HUGE benefits when we “live together in harmony!” Specifically, it is “wonderful and pleasant!” “It is good in itself, agreeable to the will of God (and) the conformity of earth to heaven! It is good for us, for our honor and comfort! It is pleasant and pleasing to God and all good men! It brings constant delight to those who do thus live in unity! It is a rare thing, and therefore admirable...(harmony is) heaven on this earth! Behold it is an amiable thing, which will attract our hearts! Behold it is an exemplary thing, which, where it is, is to be imitated by us with a holy emulation!” Moreover, harmony is “to the great delight of all bystanders! It cools the scorching heat of men’s passions, as the evening dew cools the air and refreshes the earth! It contributes very much to our fruitfulness in every thing that is good; it moistens the heart, and makes it tender and fit to receive the good seed of the Word!” (Matthew Henry)
Heavenly Father, we ask that You make ourselves, our families, and our church seekers of “harmony!” Make us the loving people You desire us to be—because in harmony, “there (You have) pronounced (Your) blessing!” Help us choose to let You rule our hearts! Help us choose to love others as You love us...so we will be a blessing to You and everlastingly blessed
