'"Dressed" and "Ready!"'
Luke 12:35-38,40 NLT
“Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your Master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let Him in the moment He arrives and knocks. The servants who are ready and waiting for His return will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, He Himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat! He may come in the middle of the night or just before dawn. But whenever He comes, He will reward the servants who are ready...You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.”
Confession: I spent a good portion of this Christmas holiday season in my favorite jammies...and I love doing this—because I'm kicking back, I'm not doing much, and I don't want to do more! The problem with “holiday pajama lounging,” however, is when the unexpected (person or situation!) knocks on the door. When that happens, then I regret not being dressed! Then I regret being on holiday! Then I regret not being prepared—because I was caught doing NOTHING! I was lazily lounging around!
Now, the truth is there is nothing wrong with “holiday pajama lounging”...but there definitely is something wrong when we Christians are spiritually dressed in jammies! That is, there is definitely a problem when we Believers spiritually kick back, do nothing, and lazily lounge around! Brothers and Sisters in Christ: we Believers are to be “dressed for service” and “READY!” So...
1) Does the way we are living (the way we spend our time and money, the way we think, the way we talk, the time we spend time with God), does our living show we are “ready and waiting” for our Master's “return?”
2) Are we spiritually “dressed” to serve God at all times—or are we mostly dressed in spiritual “jammies,” dressed to serve self?
3) Are we willing and “ready all the time” to glorify Christ—as we have been commanded?
4) Are we keeping our lamps constantly “burning” so others see JESUS in us (even those who see us all the time)?”
Lord Jesus, You clearly let us Believers know what is expected of us in this passage...but the truth is this—what You ask of us is so little, because through You we have gained so MUCH (Hope! Joy! Peace! Love! Purpose! Forgiveness! Restoration! Reward! ETERNAL LIFE!) Use Your Spirit and Word to keep changing us, Lord, so we are less and less found on “spiritual holiday” (kicking back instead of serving, do nothing, and lazily lounging around). Instead, we ask that You transform us into a people who are increasingly “dressed for service,” lamps “burning” bright, “waiting for” our Master “to return,” and “ready all the time!” We ask this for Your glory, Lord, ...and so we can “be rewarded (I tell you the truth, He Himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat!)!” Yes, Lord, give us right desire and enabling to become “dressed..." “ready,” “faithful, sensible servants”—people “whom the Master” can rely upon and trust (Luke 12:42)!
We ask this in Your name, Lord...
