'The Treasure of God's Presence'

Exodus 33:1-5a, 15-16 NIV
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way.”
When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no one put on any ornaments. For the Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you.

Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless You go with us? What else will distinguish me and Your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”

After Aaron made the golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai (see Exodus 32), the Lord was really upset with His people. Matter of fact, God told Moses He was going to “send an angel” to be with them—He would NOT go with them into the promise land Himself lest He “destroy” them “on the way.” The Lord still intended to bless His people, and He was still going to “drive out” all the bad guys for them, but His presence would not go with them...

The Israelites then “mourned” when they heard the Lord's Words. Moses interceded for them and the people repented because they didn't want to be sent without God. At this point, the people rightly realized that God's miraculous workings and His promised blessings were NOT the ultimate prize—His Presence being WITH them was their true treasure and ultimate good...

Do you ever forget that, friend? Do you ever forget the true treasure we have in the amazing Presence of our Lord? I do...

Hmm...

Heavenly Father, help me (and all those reading this) to more and more treasure Your amazing Presence! May we marvel today that we have Your Presence WITH us at all times—Your eternal Presence is always WITH those who have placed their faith in Your Son! Please cause us to recognize and “mourn” when we stray from Your Presence, Lord...and make Your Presence what we increasingly treasure, pursue, and desire. As we rightly seek to draw close and obey You, “Fill(us) with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.” (Psalm 16:11)

We ask this in Your Son's name...

AMEN!!!
