'Tending the Fig Tree'
Proverbs 27:18 NAS
He who tends the fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who cares for his master will be honored.
I remember the day this gem of a verse jumped out at me—it was just a few years ago. Fresh, purple figs are my absolute favorite thing to eat (they taste like candy to me), so it was interesting that the Lord had me notice this verse during fig season. When fig season arrives, I DAILY tend my fig tree. And as I tend my tree, I'm blessed: I get to eat all I want!
That first time this verse caught my attention, those first words “He who tends the fig tree will eat its fruit” jumped out at me because I was reminded that the Lord has taken wonderful care of me as I have tended to Him—when I daily make myself ready, available and at His disposal for His glory, I get to daily “eat” from His ample, delicious supplies...
1 Corinthians 9:7
Who at any time serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat the fruit of it? Or who tends a flock and does not use the milk of the flock?
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 2:6
The hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops.
Moreover, that second part of the verse, “he who cares for his master will be honored,” this reminded me that there is REWARD for those who make the Lord's business their first priority:
And men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely there is a God who judges on earth!”
Behold, the Lord God will come with might, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him And His recompense before Him.
Thus says the Lord, “Restrain your voice from weeping And your eyes from tears; For your work will be rewarded!”
1 Corinthians 3:8
...each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High
“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.
Holy Spirit, let us each be inspired to put our Savior FIRST: to “tend” to Him and His business first, and to go and do whatever You lead us to do. May we increasingly “tend” to our Lord through giving Him the FIRST of our talents, resources, and time, because “He who tends the fig tree WILL eat its fruit, and he who cares for his master WILL be honored.” We ask this in the Son's name, for the furthering of His glory...
