'City Lights'

John 8:12 NAS
Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life.”

John 12:36b
...believe in The Light, in order that You may become sons of light.

Matthew 5:1-2, 14-16
When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying...
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

As I've grown older, I've become increasingly hesitant to drive anywhere at night, because I hate night driving. Night-driving scares me because I've become more and more uncomfortable with only being able to see a few feet in front of my car. If I have to drive at night (even in our little city!), I stay on the the city streets that are well lit...so I can see! I count on those city's lights to guide me, to show me what's hiding in the darkness, to keep me from crashing into anything, and to push-back the darkness of the surrounding countryside...

The darkness of our city's surrounding countryside makes me think about how spiritually dark our world is. Moreover, the importance of our city's lights reminds me of the importance of my spirituallight; that is, I “follow” Jesus, I “have the Light of Life,” and I'm to “shine” bright for all to see...

Brothers and Sisters in Christ: when we “abide” and live for Christ, we glow like a light and show others what Christ is like! When we say and do as our Savior, our lives 1) guide others toward Christ, 2) our lives help illuminate spiritual darkness, 3) our lives and words help keep others from crashing, and 4) our lives push back the darkness...right where we are!

Holy Spirit, don't let us forget today that we Believers “have the Light of Life!” Not only do we have Jesus through believing in Him, but we have “BECOME sons of light”...by Christ's desire and by His design! The Lord has set us “lights” just where He wants us—right where light is needed! Through Your enabling, we ask that You help us “shine before men in such a way that (others) may see” our wonderful Lord!
