Daily Devotion for December 7, 2016

Psalm 22:8
“Commit yourself to the Lord; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”

Psalm 37:5 NAS
Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.

Proverbs 16:3
Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Psalm 31:5
Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me, O Lord, God of truth.

“Commit” is one of those words that can mean more than one thing in the English language. For example, when we “commit” a crime, we perpetrate or do something against the law. On the other hand, “commit” also means “to connect, to entrust, to put into place for disposal or safekeeping, to carry into action deliberately, to pledge oneself, to assign to a person for safekeeping, delivering into another's charge,” and “the special sense of transferring to a superior power” (Webster's Collegiate Dictionary).

Taking these definitions into consideration sure clarified how I am to “commit” myself, my ways, my works, and my spirit to the Lord! It gave me desire to pray this way:

Heavenly Father, only You know what this day holds. Only You know what I face. Help me “entrust” myself completely to You...today and every day. I “deliberately place” myself at Your “disposal,” Father. I trustingly place myself into Your hands for “safekeeping.” I “deliver” myself into Your charge, and I “transfer” all of me to You.

Holy Spirit, since the Father “ransomed me” through faith in His Son, help me willingly leave behind me/myself/I today. Since “my spirit” now belongs to God—the lover of my soul—help me “pledge” myself to His good, perfect ways as made known in The Word. I willingly “transfer” all power, decision-making, and rights to the Son—may He do with me as He will. Since I am His and we are eternally “connected” through You, help me crave Him and obediently follow in all things, in all areas—no holding back...

Lord Jesus, help me wholeheartedly “commit” myself to You...because You are wonderful, Your ways are best (they are for my best good and for Your Father's glory!), and You “delight” in me! Moreover, help me also “commit” all my ways to You—so that every way I go I am actually obediently following You. Moreover, please make my heart increasingly “Trust also in” You—because I know You “do” what is best and perfectly right. Furthermore, I “commit” my works to You—that is, help me do whatever Your Spirit leads me to do (or not do), with Your strength and enabling, for Your glory...

“Into Your hand (we) commit (our) spirits,” Jesus! Since “You have ransomed (us), O Lord, God of truth,” help us wholeheartedly “commit” ourselves to You! Make us a people who are ALL in!
