'Come After Me!'
Matthew 4:19a NAS
And He said to them, “Follow me” (literally, “Come here after Me”)...
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.”
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.'"
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me...
(Adapted from Charles Spurgeon)
Jesus is the Good Shepherd going before His sheep, bidding them to follow Him, and ever leading them on with the sweet word, “Come.” Though the Law repels, the gospel attracts. Though the Law shows the distance between God and man; the Gospel bridges that awful chasm, and brings the sinner across it.
The cry of the Christian religion—the cry of Jesus our Savior—is the gentle word, “Come.” From the first moment of your spiritual life until the day you are ushered into glory, the language of Christ to you is “Come,” child—“come here after Me, come to Me,” and come “follow Me.” As a mother holds out her hand to her little child and woos it to walk by saying, “Come,” even so does Jesus. He will always be ahead of you, bidding you follow Him as the soldier follows His captain. He will always go before you to pave your way and clear your path. You shall hear His animating voice calling you to “Come here after Me” all through life. And in the end, while in the solemn hour of death, His sweet words with which He shall usher you into the heavenly world shall be “Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world”... (Matthew 25:34)
Lord Jesus, help us Believer's hear and respond to Your constant cry of “Come after Me”...and may our daily response be that we cry “Come!” to You as well! We cry “come” and ask that You abide with us—be the sole occupant of the throne of our hearts, reign there without rival, and consecrate us entirely to Your service! Please give us hearts that desire to “come after” You, Lord. Help us hear Your loving words, take Your outstretched hand, and long to follow...so we have nearer and closer communication with You!
