'PROVE IT!'

John 21:15-17 NASB
So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.

When Jesus reinstated Peter, the Lord asked him three times if he loved Him...one time for each instance Peter had denied Him. After each love declaration, Jesus responded by giving Peter a command. Isn't that interesting? That causes me to pause and think. Christ responded to each of Peter's love declarations by giving him instructions to obey. It was as if the Lord was saying, “I hear your words, Peter: now prove it by obeying My commands!”

Hmm...

Lord, it's so easy for us to say we love You: give us right desire to prove it by completely obeying Your commands, for You said...

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15),

“He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him, and will disclose Myself to him” (John 14:21),

“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make our abode with him” (John 14:23),

“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments, and abide in His love” (John 15:10).

“You are My friends, if you do what I command you” (John 15:14),

“For THIS is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 1:3)...

Dear Jesus: Let our declared love for You be far more than mere words or lip service: “THIS is love, that we walk according to (Your) commandments” (2 John 1:6)!

AMEN!!!
