'Taking Care of the Sick'

Matthew 5:13-16 NAS
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Jude 20-23
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. And have mercy on some, who are doubting; save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.

James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, AND to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Romans 12:1-2a
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...

This week, five members of my immediate family are miserably sick—everybody, that is, except my youngest and myself. So I've spent large portions of my time caring for the sick, and it hasn't been a lot of fun. Meanwhile, I'm doing everything I can so we last two survivors don't get sick! We “healthy folks” are constantly washing our hands, and we are taking extra vitamin C, immune-boosting echinacea, zinc, colloidal silver—in hopes that we don't get contaminated...

As I was praying this morning—praying for strength to compassionately care for my sick family, praying that they would be healed, AND praying that we last two don't get contaminated(!!!), it occurred to me that there's a bigger picture picture here...

Lord Jesus, we Believers are Your healing “salt” and “light!” We are to “care” for others by bringing them Your healing Good News, Your healing Words, and Your healing love! Help us willingly do this for the “sick” in our midst (through Your strength and leading): for hurting Believers, wandering Believers, the needy, those in “distress,” and the lost. Moreover, KEEP US CLEAN as we take care of them, Lord! To stay uncontaminated, we know what we must do: we must diligently build ourselves “up on (our) most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, (keeping ourselves) in the love of God, (and wait) anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.” Then we can present our “bodies a living and holy sacrifice” for service—because we are being strengthened, cleaned, and “transformed by the renewing of your mind” through Your Word/Spirit!

We ask this in Your name, Jesus—we ask that You help us be kept clean so we can bring Your grace, love, mercy, and healing to those who are “sick” (WITHOUT being influenced by the surrounding sins—so we are not contaminated “by the world.”)!
