'We Call Him "Our Father!"'
Matthew 23:9 NAS
Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
“Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
2 Corinthians 6:18
“And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.
Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
1 John 3:1a
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are!
Being able to call God “Our Father” is quite amazing—don't you agree? Calling our Lord “Father” is such an awesome privilege because it implies the greatest level of intimacy: a parent-child relationship of the strongest kind of love, with the greatest level of care, and with a bond that cannot be broken—ever! I sure like that. Moreover, I like the fact that Jesus referred to God as “your Father” or “our Father” over and over. Matter of fact, He did this more than 11 times in the book of Matthew...when addressing those who were following Him. That's a big deal! What a Great God we have! What a marvelous Father and loving Lord!
As you go about Your day today, take time to consider “your (WONDERFUL!) Father”...
He “has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace” (2 Thes. 2:16),
He is “A father of the fatherless and a” fair and righteous “judge” (Psalm 68:5),
He has compassion for us “Just as a father has compassion on his children” (Psalm 103:13),
He reproves and corrects us “Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights” (Proverbs 3:12),
He constantly molds us like “clay” because we “are the work of (His) hand” (Isaiah 64:8),
He transforms us because we “are to be perfect, as (our) heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48),
He “sees” everything we do for Him...and He “will reward” us (Matthew 6:4),
He desires His Son's life to shine in us, so we “glorify” Him (Matthew 5:16),
He “knows what you need before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8),
He “forgives” all our transgressions and requires us to “forgive others” (Matthew 6:14)
He gives “what is good to those who ask Him” (Matthew 7:11),
He knows everything going on, and He is in control (Matthew 10:29),
He “disciplines” us so we look more like His Son (Hebrews 12:9),
He gives us His “grace...and peace” (Romans 1:7),
He is the ONE “over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:6)
He is the ONE “who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light” (Col. 1:12),
He gives us good and perfect “gifts,” like the most precious gift of His Son (James 1:17),
He doesn't change, ever: “there is no variation or shifting shadow” in Him (James 1:17)...
The list goes on and on...
Heavenly Father, what a privilege we Believers have—we call You “our Father!” What amazing grace You give us—You made us “sons and daughters!” We “children of God” come before You today... 1) remembering Your purposes, 2) praising Your goodness, 3) obeying Your Words, 4) following Your Son, 5) telling others about You, and 6) crying out “Abba, Father” to the One who “bestowed on us” such a great privilege and wonderful “love!”
